How to set up Open VPN

What is Open VPN? #

In this application,  Open VPN allows you to connect to your dropzone’s network. You will then be accessing the Internet through your dropzone’s network.

Why is is useful? #

Setting up a VPN connection at your dropzone will to allow you to connect to your dropzone’s LAN (Local Area Network) remotely. This is useful when you are running a Dell server that has iDRAC (integrated Dell Remote Access Controller). You can POWER ON your server from anywhere when you have OPEN VPN set up with a DELL server with iDRAC configured. You need to be on the local network to access iDRAC.

Prerequisites #

  1. You must have a router at your dropzone capable of setting up a VPN Server. I am currently using an ASUS router. If you check the ASUS website for the router you are thinking about buying you can check to see if it supports “VPN Server OVPN : Yes” (OVPN = Open VPN). You don’t have to use an ASUS router. Just make sure it supports Open VPN Server.
  2. You need to have a DDNS configured.
  3. You will also need to have Open VPN Connect installed on the computer you want to use to access the local area network remotely.
